MGG HISTORY
The inception of the Mu Gamma Gamma Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated was the concept of Brother William F. Robinson. During the fall of 1984, Brother Robinson, a member of Phi Upsilon Chapter, became tired of driving to meetings in the South Jersey Region and began exploring the possibilities of starting a chapter in the Somerset County area. He recalled that the number of Brothers known to him through social settings and community involvement would exceed the minimum requirements mandated by our international body for awarding a chapter charter.
Brother Robinson informed Brothers James Hargrave, Alexander Hastie, and Edward Wake, who were life members, that he was in the process of exploring the possibilities of starting a new chapter to which they expressed genuine interest.
As the conception evolved to fruition, the Brothers provided names of additional Brothers, and after considerable conversations with Brother John Epps of International, the process of procuring a chapter advanced.
It was in 1985, during the first quarter of the year that eighteen Brothers made commitments for establishing a chapter in the Somerset area. A chapter charter was awarded to Mu Gamma Gamma in October of 1985. At a dinner held at the Travelodge Motel on Easton Avenue in Somerset of Franklin Township, New Jersey, officers were installed by Brother Burrell Dozier, the Second District Corridor Representative. Twenty-five Brothers and their spouses were in attendance at the installation ceremony.
The Brothers who attended the installation ceremony and signed the charter as members of Mu Gamma Gamma Chapter were as follows: Charles T. Boyd, James Hargrave, Peter C. Harvey, Alexander Hastie, Kenneth J. Heywood, Joe Jackson, Jr., Marion Linder, Harvast Mathis, James W. Mitchell, Alvin Rew, William F. Robinson, Alfonza W. Sumpter, James Surratt II, Anthony Thompson, Edward A. Wake, and Anthony Walker.
Brother William F. Robinson was elected the 1st Basileus for the inaugural term and served from October 15th, 1985 through October 31st, 1987. Brother Robinson’s administrative team included Edward A. Wake, Vice Basileus; Anthony Thompson, Keeper of Records and Seal; James Mitchell, Keeper of Finance; Alfonza W. Sumpter, Keeper of Peace; and Peter C. Harvey, Editor to the Oracle.
